Motorola DROID v BlackBerry Storm

Monday, November 16th, 2009

The purpose of this paper is not to endorse one product over another, it is simply to give my personal assessment of the functions and feasibility of use of the Motorola DROID versus the BlackBerry Storm.  Having used the BlackBerry Storm since it’s initial release in late 2008, I have endured the long list of “issues” that many users have posted on the internet.  As soon as the Motorola DROID hit the Verizon network in the last week or so, I wanted to try it out.  After all, it is supposed to do everything I can do on the Storm and is touted as a potential “iPhone killer.

I consider myself more of a “power user” when it comes to mobile devices.  I have always wanted the “latest” smart phone on the market, but I also wanted to keep it real.  That is, the device MUST do what I need it to do to stay productive, have immediate and current information at my fingertips, have “fun” with the device, and of course have the speed and power to keep up with me all day long.  I usually work four 10-hour days, but oftentimes I don’t have the luxury to charge my phone for over 14 hours on a daily basis.

As an avid Verizon Wireless customer, I refuse to move over to a different network to suffer the agony of dropped calls and no coverage in the areas I frequent most all over the USA.  Since I have a work phone on the AT&T network, I have proven time and time again, both locally and while traveling, that the network with the best coverage – based on my personal experience – is hands down, Verizon.

Both devices discussed here are my personal devices.  I pay the monthly access, phone usage, data plan, etc.  I have purchased both devices and received nothing from anyone to do this comparison.  I am simply sharing my personal exposure to the devices with you because I believe you would benefit from it in making a decision on what device to go with.

Since this comparison is based upon my PERSONAL usage habits, there may be areas that are not covered.  The following are the areas that I will covered:

  1. Email Usage and Support
  2. Tethering
  3. Applications
  4. Keyboard versus Touchscreen
  5. Phone Application
  6. SMS/MMS Application
  7. Internet Browser
  8. Camera
  9. Social Networking
  10. Security Settings
  11. Music, Pictures, and Youtube
  12. GPS Navigation
  13. Memory Use
  14. General OS Issues
  15. Battery Life
  16. The Bottom Line
